About Daum Glass
Daum excelled in the production of Art Deco glassware and its designers favoured geometric forms as well as thicker and more transparent glass which contrasted with slender shapes and flowing lines of Art Nouveau glassware so popular at the turn of the century.. In the 1920s, the Art Nouveau colours inspired by nature changed to the colours which dominated contemporary abstract paintings, such as topaz, blues and ambers. Designs were increasingly monochromatic and variations of moon white, beige, glacier blue and light yellows were particularly popular. Vases, bowls and lamp shades no longer relied on the glassblowing technique but were cast and decorated with cut and acid-etched stylised patterns, as illustrated by this vase. The new manager Paul Daum was chemist by training and experimented with the use of hydrofluoric acid to vary surface textures of the glass. Towards the middle of the 1920s, friezes, volutes, curved beams or chevron patterns gave rhythm to compositions. Fully signed around the bottom edge DAUM NANCY FRANCE with the croix de Lorraine

Wonderful French Art Deco Leleu glass vase on metal base

Wonderful French Art Deco Leleu glass vase on metal base

Item #1563

This is quite a nice piece, one does not typically find glass by Leleu, but here is a wonderful transitional piece, probably done around 1925. You have this very ornate floral rim, much like Lalique, Sabino, D' Avsen and other great French glass illustrators of this period. You can see the wonderful play of vertical ribbed glass which completes itself in the deep floral rim, even some of the original red coloring remains on the rim. The other wonderful detail is the base, the metal is designed to look like Galuchat or shagreen. It was certainly the rage at this time. The glass is heavy and typical of the high quality work that was done during this time.

Very unique etched glass vase with sun-god metal work jardiniere

Very unique etched glass vase with sun-god metal work jardiniere

Item #1558

Very large and unusual detailed large glass vase with unique metalwork. Looks to be of German origin, the metal work is highly stylized and detailed. The top represents the "sun", on both sides with wonderfully fitted with a starburst metal collar design that covers this very ornate leaf and flower etched clear glass vase. The piece is secured in a wonderful stable metal base. It quality of the metal finish is original antique nickel over bronze metal. A very unusual item for our shop not only with an art deco but also a Nouveau point of view. I always like to see these two periods comes together in a kind of transitional design that allows it to live in many places. Maybe your home or your museum?

Extremely rare bronzed metal Art Nouveau to Arts & Crafts Jugendstil style desk or table lamp

Extremely rare bronzed metal Art Nouveau to Arts & Crafts Jugendstil style desk or table lamp

Item #1516

This original and stylized lamp, circa 1910-1920 has all of the details of greatness. Nouveau is not a specialty of mine, but I see the artistry and perfection in this piece for sure. A thoroughly detailed bronze metal base or stand, featuring a tripod of faceted legs, great floral motif detail running upward and a most impressive highly stylized green iridescent glass insert acts as a subtle yet powerful decorative center support. All of this, delicately coming together to hold the two 1/2 circle pieces of frosted glass. Nice illumination!

Presented here is a stunning piece of art that would look great in many settings, even the early period of Art Deco, since it has such simple clean lines. I have always taken this approach, "buy great design" Also, make note of the highly stylized original art deco on/off switch, haven't seen one like this before

Item #1477

Wonderful original French table or desk lamp designed by French artist Pierre D'Avsen. Nice details with original appointments, even the on/off switch. It is always nice to see an original piece that was designed to be together, not a marriage (as we much of these days on the internet). Of course it would look great on your desk or bedside, nice details on molded glass, with an almost mushroom shape and artist signature molded into the lower part of the glass edge.

1930s Art Deco Glass Vase • Signed Müller Frères Luneville

1930s Art Deco Glass Vase • Signed Müller Frères Luneville

1930s Art Deco Glass Vase • Signed Müller Frères Luneville

Item #1139

This stunning and extremely rare 1930s Art Deco peach/amber glass vase was manufactured by the Müller Freres in Luneville, France. A superb vase that sports a magnificent and quite complex floral and animal motif in a nice stepped vase design. A strong sense of depth has been achieved by embossing or beveling part of the glass, producing very sharp details and a wonderfully tactile effect. The beauty of this vase is further reinforced by the satinated surface achieved by masterly polishing techniques. The glass of this vase is very thick and as such the vase is quite hefty. The vase is signed on the bottom "Müller Frères Luneville".

The Measurements:
6" Tall X 6" Diameter (at the top)

About Müller Frères:
The large Muller family originated from Kalhauzenand rested on a long tradition of glass workers. When the German Empire annexed the Elsace in 1871, the Muller family fled (9 brothers and 1 sister) to the quieter Lunéville. The two oldest brothers, Désiré and Eugène Muller, ended up in the glassworks of Emile Gallé, where they learned how to produce art glass (± 1885). The other family members found work in several other glassworks in the surroundings of Lunéville and developed into recognised glassdecorators. Moreover Henri, Pierre and Victor Muller also ended up working for Gallé. Around 1895 the time seemed ripe for Henri Muller to set up an independent glass workshop in Lunéville (rue the Sainte Anne). His brothers reacted enthusiastically and soon joined him, as a result of which the Muller Frères glassworks became a fact. The Mullers mastered all well-known glass decorating techniques and always experimented with new methods. They developed rapidly into a renowned company and established their name for their large diversity and quality (colour setting, decoration and design of their vases and lamps). During the first World War the Muller Frères glassworks closed its doors and the family members spread out over France, working for different glassworks (for instance Camille, Jean and Auguste went to "Landier Et Houdaille" in Sèvres and Émile worked at Choisy-Le-Roi). In this period they designed an Art Deco line, where decorations of animals and landscapes were strikingly beautiful. The Müller Frères pieces are often compared to Daum pieces in terms of quality and technique. In 1936 the Müller Frères closed their glassworks.

1930s Art Deco Crystal Vase • Val St. Lambert

Item #1127

This is a very interesting 1930s Art Deco crystal vase by Belgian glassware manufacturer, Val St. Lambert. At first glance it's simply a beautiful example of an Art Deco cut crystal vase. Not counting all of the cranberry overlay diamond facets, there are a total of 22 "sides" to this VERY hefty vase! You'll always be able to see another side to this situation!

With his brother Ernest and sister Ernestine he managed one of the largest art glass factories in France during the Art Deco period. The works from the Charles Schneider glass factory used all of the glass making techniques that were developed during the 1920s. This particularly elegant piece of glass is perfect with or without adornments and is virtually a study in dynamics. The light refracts radiantly through the acid-etched treatment near the top and gradually diminishes as the umber color deepens near the base.
