Spectacular Art Deco Desk, Chair and Matching Cabinet in Ruhlmann style!

Spectacular Art Deco Desk, Chair and Matching Cabinet in Ruhlmann style!

Item #1620 Added February 3, 2012

You've probably only ever seen a piece like this in books on Art Deco. This custom suite was made for our shop, the goal was to re-create this famous Ruhlmann desk using the finest Abedul grained Birch wood (like the French amboyna wood) was chosen and the "ivorite" details were shaped and inlayed by master craftsmen working to create this timeless classic. Additionally, for the first time we created a companion piece that would allow storage, printers or whatever to help design and create a timeless room, uncluttered with all of the office elements typical of most enviornments. A real signature of the Grand Art Deco period. The finish is pure "French" polish with parchment leather inlay as part of the writing surface of the desk. The drawers are all joined in the class French tradition, heavy and meaningful. Even the chair is completed to emulate this design and of course needs to accompany the desk. The chair is upholstered in fine cream leather to match all of the inlays in the desk. It has taken almost one year to complete this and get it ready for the shop, so if this one is for you, it may be the only one for quite some time.

This one will certainly take your breath away!

Ruhlmann's legacy as a designer was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2004. In 2009, he was called the "Art Deco's greatest artist" by the New York Times.

Spectacular Unique One of Kind (Modernist) Art Deco Cabinet Storage Display

Item #1619 Added January 26, 2012

WOW WOW! Feast your eyes on what may be one of the most unique Art Deco pieces of furniture we've offered for a long time. When I first saw this piece, sitting in a shop in Argentina, my jaw dropped to the floor. I had never seen anything like before (thought I've seen everything by now)? There is so much design and detail in the piece of furniture, someone who originally designed it (wish I knew who), utilized many of the best elements of geometric modernist triangular treatments. Yet there is a slight Art Nouveau treatment with the rounds dripping wood designs down the top and sides. Yet these shapes seem to resolve themselves in the feet which reflect a little of both. Forget all of that, just look at this piece of furniture, has an almost surreal feeling as well, Baby are you for real (or are you surreal or what). Wish I had a place in my house for this piece, I would not let this one get away. Never see this again. I think you know what i mean!

Large Art Deco Cabinet, display storage with hand carved front

Item #1618 Added January 26, 2012

A beautiful European style Art Deco Cabinet with very nice detailing. The main wood treatment is a spectacular grained sycamore, found in a lot of European art deco furniture. What I love about this piece, first of all is the wonderful carving that runs down the front. The restoration really enhances the look with a rather contrasting point of view circa 1930's. Dark mahogany wood details the top, bottom and carved front. A perfect bookcase and/or display case for decorative objects, yet equally as functional in a bedroom for the storage of sweaters and clothing. Adjustable shelves in all areas and nice size too.

A wonderful and very useful design. Modernist point of view with triangles and 1/4 circles in two color enamel glass. Yellow and black, quite rare really. I do not see these very often and have not bought one of these two-tone colors in over 3 years. The shape is great because it works perfect for a any floral setting. Most likely designed by Karl Palda. Very high quality enamel paint, not hand painted after.

Napier Dial a Drink Classic Shaker

Napier Dial a Drink Classic Shaker

Item #1614 Added January 20, 2012

Here is the classic drink mix shaker. Of course like many great designs, has been copied, but this is an original one, circa 1935, in fact this one has its own patent number filed in 1932. Appears to invented by Leroy Haviland Fontan. The Napier company (from Meriden, Connecticut) was very busy during this time, figuring out more ways to fix "bathtub gin" or whatever concoction to encourage people to keep everyone drinking and on the up and up. Well today, we have not lost the art of drinking cocktails, but the forms to make them in do not hold a candle (or container) to this early days in the 1930's. This one is in great condition, restored and ready to go for maybe another 80 years!

The condition is excellent, newly restored chromed brass with glass insert. Stamped The Barman on the bottom and also on one of the top latches. Extremely rare stepped Double Door English Flip Top Bar

Extremely rare stepped Double Door English Flip Top Bar

Item #1610 Added January 14, 2012

We finally completed the restoration on this very unusual English flip top envelope bar. In all my years and travels, I've never seen this particular model. I thought by now I'd seen everything? It works very much like a typical English flip top or yacht bar, (check the references on our web site Items 404, 435, 671), which we have had many over the years, but never this model. In addition to the flip top, belly up to the bar feature, this one has two very distinct stepped openings. Lets call the top opening for glasses and small items and then of course the typical lower opening for bottles. This model offers just about everything you could need, great storage, great serving piece and a great stand behind bar, all folding up into a very small package. Of course, you can also add a couple of bar stools as well.

One of my personal favorites. This is the ultimate. Compact bar yet practical and become the focus at your party. Great access from the front or the back and on wheels so you can move it away from the wall when needed and get behind the bar and make some cocktails for all your friends. We have had these many times over the years, but not for sometime. This one is newly restored with grain filled teak wood and new chrome handles and kick on the base. These bars were made between 1930-1950's and would look great in almost any house or apartment setting. You can even use it with a couple of simple bar stools.

Very rare silver-plate WMF Modernist two bottle wine/champagne cooler

Item #1608 Added January 5, 2012

Gosh these are about as rare as "hens teeth". The double or triple bottle wine cooler or champagne bucket. This is a particularly refined example made by the famous German company WMF (inscribed on the bottom). Notice the modernist design of the stylized zig-zag faceted shapes imbedded in the oval shape. Nice strong ebony handles also fitting extremely well with the over-all shape. The only thing missing here is the party and friends needed to make a very festive time with an unusually rare and festive double cooler champagne bucket. How cool is that?

This is a wonderful little table, all original and certainly looks like it must have come off a French transatlantic ship. Made out of shaped metal with nice brass detailing and mirror top. Notice how the support stem echoes the design of the ship's steam stacks. At least that's what I think. Great shape and is just perfect for that "just perfect spot". Could have been originally a smoking stand or a place to hold your glass (between sips).

A wonderful original artist signed (C. Vanhaute, a Belgian artist) very much in the style of the great French artist Jean Dunand. This Japanese inspired lacquered panel has all of the earmarks of a great period piece. It utilizes an amazing patina with the molted dark background impressed with a school of stylized angel fish (very deco) swimming within a nice reef of well planted flora (or is that fauna)? The panel has lots of dimension, not only the fish, but the air bubbles and plants all have a glazed gold to green patina. Stunning artistry, warm and a pleasure to look at.

Very interesting design. I love the chrome and copper with the peach glass. It has always been a favorite design color combination for me. Super Petitot modern design. The diameter echoes the glass edge which lights up nicely when the bulbs are turned on. A wonderful design for use.

1930's "BouBou" Monkey Sculpture Max Le Verrier

1930's "BouBou" Monkey Sculpture Max Le Verrier

Item #1597 Added December 3, 2011

Here is a wonderfully rare version of the Max Le Verrier sculpture, "BouBou". It is a monkey with a humorous expression holding an illuminated electric lamp in one hand while the other is held to his ear. A similar version of this piece has been photographed for inclusion in the book 'Mascottes Automobiles' by Michel Legrand. Le Verrier produced a small range of monkey subject mascots in the 1920s. This one is perhaps one of his most famous creations. "BouBou" is made of a beautifully patinated metal and he sits obediently upon a round marble base. This charming and quizzical sculpture stands 7" tall and is signed "M LeVerrier".

Measurements:
7" t x 3" W x 3" D

About Max Le Verrier:
Max le Verrier was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1891. From an early age he showed great promise as an artist and sculptor; and after serving in the French army during World War I, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva. During his studies in Switzerland he met fellow sculptors Pierre le Faguays and Marcel Bouraine, who became close friends and with whom he collaborated for much of his life. Upon completing his studies, le Verrier returned to France in 1919, and founded his own studio in Paris. It was at this time that he created his first popular sculpture - the famous 'Pelican' - which was the first of a long line of animal figures that bore his name. Le Verrier was awarded a Gold medal for his sculptures at the 1925 Paris l'Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels (the famous exhibition from which the term 'Art Deco' was derived). In 1926, le Verrier opened his own foundry, casting pieces for a wide range of French sculptors of the period, including Pierre Le Faguays, Marcel Bourain, Janle, Denis, and Charles. From the outset, he gained a reputation for the very high quality work, exceptional detailing and accuracy of the items that his firm produced. Interestingly, the foundry did not cast in bronze as is commonly assumed, because le Verrier felt that he could achieve better detail by using his own proprietary mix of metals. At the same time as running his foundry, le Verrier continued to sculpt his own creations, and in the 1920's he became famous for his studies of woman as part of the Art Deco era's fascination with the ideal female form. His female figures are characterised by a lithe athleticism and perfect symmetry; and are highly regarded and much sought after. Le Verrier continued working throughout the 1930's - receving a medal of honour at the Paris International Exhibition in 1937 - before being arrested in 1944 for his resistance activities against the Nazi-backed regime. He reopened his studio after World War II, and continued to sculpt until his death in 1973.

French original Art Deco ATO wooden clock with battery

Item #1589 Added December 2, 2011

This is a wonderful wooden mantle or desk clock with great marquetry. These early ATO clocks were very stylized and quite innovative. These are all original battery operated clocks. I have had many over the years, these are NOT digital quartz clock, but original vintage movements. This one has been slightly adapted (and improved I must say), to accommodate the battery in a separate holder that clips on to the original movement mechanism. I have tested it now for months and it works great. I like it. I also like the beautiful wood treatment on this piece, where most of the other ATO clocks I've had, tend to be more streamline and glass.

Exceptional Ceramic Vase by Eva Zeisel 1930s

Item #1588 Added December 2, 2011

Eva Zeisel a most important 20th and 21st centruy artist and mast ceramicist whose design directions have circumvented almost all styles for the past 70 years. This particular piece offered here is quite exceptional in style and size. Manufactured most likely in German circa 1930's. There is a slight mark on the bottom hard to read, but the repetitive modernist art deco design using these playful colors is quite unusual.

Measurements:
16" T x 7" W

About Eva Zeisel:
Born in Budapest in 1906, Eva Stricker entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts at age 17, intending to become a painter, but her mother prevailed upon her to learn some trade whereby she could earn a living, the world of fine art being chancy. So Eva apprenticed herself to a traditional potter and began learning her trade. The life of the apprentice in any of the trades was not always easy or pleasant, but Eva persisted and soon graduated to journeyman status. Just a year after that her work was displayed at the Philadelphia Sesquicentennial, where she won an honorable mention. By then she was working as a designer in the Kispester Factory in Budapest. She then advertised in the trade papers that she was a qualified journeyman seeking a position and received several responses. When asked recently why she chose the particular one she did she replied, "Because it was the furthest from home." She wanted to travel and widen her experience of the world and at the same time increase her skills. She moved to Schramberg, Germany, where she acquired skills in all phases of industrial production and became one of the first (and certainly the first woman) to move the ceramic arts into contemporary mass production.

This a wonderful classic French early 1920's art deco demi-lune style storage cabinet. Please take special note of the wonderful floral marquetry in 4 panels on the front and side doors. The legs are very reminiscent of the designs of Paul Follet, Sue et Mare or my favorite Maurice Dufrene. Very high quality work throughout. It is a piece I bought about 3 years ago and has just completed a beautiful "frame off restoration". The legs are delicate and graceful. This an heirloom quality piece of furniture, I am thrilled with it. It also has two matching interior drawers with additional simple marquetry and storage. The top is all flamed crotch walnut wood with some very subtle marquetry as well. A stunning piece of furniture.

About Daum Glass
Daum excelled in the production of Art Deco glassware and its designers favoured geometric forms as well as thicker and more transparent glass which contrasted with slender shapes and flowing lines of Art Nouveau glassware so popular at the turn of the century.. In the 1920s, the Art Nouveau colours inspired by nature changed to the colours which dominated contemporary abstract paintings, such as topaz, blues and ambers. Designs were increasingly monochromatic and variations of moon white, beige, glacier blue and light yellows were particularly popular. Vases, bowls and lamp shades no longer relied on the glassblowing technique but were cast and decorated with cut and acid-etched stylised patterns, as illustrated by this vase.
