Very very rare Thorens "Excelda" Camera phone Phonograph player circa 1932

Item #1394 SOLD

This is an authentic Excelda portable gramophone, the portable phonograph of the 1930's that resembled the pocket cameras of that time (usually referred to as a "Cameraphone"). It was made by Thorens, the famous Swiss manufacturer of gramophones and sold in the early 1930's. This model is in brown with metal, faux-lizard, crackly finish. The speed control are operated by a lever at the back of the gramophone. The 2.5" turntable is covered in brown felt, and the record is secured by screw that closes the case. The leather carrying handle is intact and in sturdy condition. The Dimensions are 2" high, 11" long, and 4 and 3/4" wide. This phonograph is absolutely authentic and complete with all parts, The condition is exceptional. It was kept in the red felt bag (as seen with moth holes), but because of this it is perfect original condition. A real collectors piece.

You can watch a Youtube demonstration of this wonderful player.

Thorens is a Swiss manufacturer of high-end audio equipment. They are historically renowned for the range of phonographs (turntables) they produce. In addition to audio playback equipment, they are also a historical producer of harmonicas and cigarette lighters

Spectacular Gaveau French Art Deco Piano by Dominique

Spectacular Gaveau French Art Deco Piano by Dominique

Spectacular Gaveau French Art Deco Piano by Dominique

Item #1356 SOLD

Ultra rare and magnificent French art deco piano in the manner of Dominique circa 1933.
Graceful two toned mahogany maple cabinet raised on streamline supports in the most sophisticated 30's French high style. Also accented by an unusual brass lyre. Gaveau pianos made some of the finest art deco art-case pianos known.

You can see a similar design of this piano pictured in photos from the French luxury liner Normandie. It is documented that Dominique was a major design source for the Le Normandie, designing one of only four private luxury suites. These suites were all fashioned with highest level of current French taste, design and materials. These suites were occupied by some of the most famous and talented stars of the day, Marlene Dietrich, Fred Astaire, Johnny Weissmuller,Cary Grant, James Steward, Thomas Mann, Salvidor Dali and Joseph Kennedy to name a few.

Dominique was founded by Andre Domin (1883 - 1962) and Marcel Genevriere (1885 - 1976). Their furniture design was characterized by simplicity and dignity. One of Dominique's first commissions was to provide furniture for the home of silver designer Jean Puiforcat in Biarritz. This was followed by a commission to do the establishment of the perfumer Houbigant in Neuilly. Beginning in 1926 they exhibited with Chareau, Legrain, Puiforcat and Raymond Templier as the "Groupe des Cinq". Dominique exhibited a "Salon d'un Ambassadeur" at the 1925 Paris Exposition International des Arts Deratifs et Industrieles Modernes. They also exhibited at the Exposition Colonial in Paris in 1931 and created a "Salon de Musique" for the 1937 Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques also in Paris. Ruhlmann is without rival in the 20th century and 80 years later those pianos demanded over $500.000 .

This particular piano, made by Gaveau possesses a gorgeous, powerful tone. It has been fully restored with a french polish treatment on the cabinet and also includes ivory keys. This fine example sums up Gaveau's philosophy as a piano- cabinet maker.

5 year warranty.

Matching bench included.

1937 Streamline Art Deco Butterfly Wurlitzer Baby Grand Piano

1937 Streamline Art Deco Butterfly Wurlitzer Baby Grand Piano

Item #1354 SOLD

I've been waiting for one of these for over 5 years! The wait is over! Many industrious companies have tried all kinds of decorative design developments throughout time. Wurlitzer is another great American company and extremely innovative in this way. During the Art Deco period, owner Rudolph Wurlitzer working with other innovators, experimented with new piano designs, electronics and many new technologies. They developed not only great acoustic pianos but also some of the first electric pianos.

This Wurlitzer Butterfly piano with its unique winged shaped design is probably one of the most successful and sought after Art Deco innovations developed during this period. Manufactured and designed around 1937, no one really knows how many were made in this model (I've heard a rumor there were 75). The butterfly was made in at least 2 different sizes, (73 keys, in art deco, duncan phyfe and Louis XVth style cases) the one offered here is by far the most professional version of this piano (standard 88 key) and of course, most valuable.

Of all the Wurlitzer Butterfly Pianos I've seen, this model has the best detailing. The design of the music stand mimics the streamline banding around the case. The design of the wood that backs the pedals has great art deco detailing as well. The walnut is beautiful, warm and deeply grained. The original matching bench is included. This piano sounds and plays great. There are very few of these pianos left in existence today. They are very rare and desirable among collectors and musicians alike. This piano is tuned to standard concert pitch, and can be used as a normal piano for daily use. It has impressive volume and tone, considering its size. The piano comes from the original owner's children who have owned it for the life of the piano, it is in remarkable original condition. There are no cracks in the sound board and all of the parts are intact including the rare wood baffles that cover the inside of the butterfly top. All with original finish and very very nice. The original keys are made of ivory.
