Original watercolor, on paper of Josephine Baker French circa 1934

Item #1419 SOLD

This is a wonderful original painting executed by the School of Paris painter Boris Solotareff (whose work is in the permanent collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others). He went to Paris in the early 1920’s and associated himself with famous people in the theater (in one catalogue there is an illustration of a portrait of Igor Stravinsky that he painted). Many of his works executed in Paris were of people in the theater, famous opera singers, dancers, directors and pianists of that time. This beautiful watercolor executed in a manner so calming with the soft brown skin tones the red ruby lips that are so soothing, revealing the true beauty of Josephine Baker off the stage.

According to Josephine Baker's son, Jean-Claude Baker, this portrait was done around the time Josephine shot the movie "Zou Zou," a personal favorite movie of Josephine's. A floral corsage accents an asymmetrical background in this pensive and dramatic "Petit maitre" portrait of Josephine Baker. On the back there is also another line drawing with the estate stamp of the artist Boris Solotareff. Provenance: Estate of Louise Bauer Parry, 1986 Private Collection.

About the Artist Boris Solotareff
Boris Solotareff was born in Bendare, Romania in 1889. He studied art in Odessa until 1907, when, at the age of eighteen he moved to Munich. He arrived in that city just as it was beginning to assert its role as a major European cultural capital. Solotareff enrolled at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunst during the heyday of the Munich Secession. In the seven years he spent in Munich, he would have been able to experience first hand the dramatic influence of Kandinsky’s Phalanx and Blaue Reiter groups. At the exhibition held by Kandinsky at the Neue Kunstler Vereinigung, the young Romanian artist would have had perhaps his first exposure to the works of Picasso, Braque, and Vlaminck. During the first war he went to Lausanne and then stayed in Paris until 1937.

One of Solotareff’s most splendid paintings, and one of the first to survive, is his Interior of 1913, toward the end of his Munich period. In this depiction of a humble indoor scene, two men are seated around a small table, reading by lamplight. A stove glows in the middle-ground. this image represents the very essence of gemutlichkeit, of domestic coziness. Like so many of the paintings that Solotareff will go on to paint, it is a profoundly, if not exuberantly, happy work of art. it reaffirms the simple pleasures of life, the pleasures of reading and good companionship. Its style is related in a general way to that of German Impressionists like Adolf von Menzel, with the swift panache of its laden brush, the sudden flashes of light. Small Village in Munich was painted a year later. This sympathetic rendering of a country cottage, nestled among trees, suggests that our artist has been closely studying the Brittany paintings of Gauguin. This is seen not only in the dramatically titled perspective, which seems to be that of an airborne bird, but also in the green and russet tones so dear to the French artist. A similarly post – Impressionist influence inspires the attractively composed Snow Covered Roof Tops, in which angular mounds of tawny hay, rendered with deft slices of a palette in the manner of Van Gogh, compete with the stately angles of the brown bar to create an evocative winter scene.

Boris Solotareff lived longer in America than anywhere else, and it was here that he died in 1966. By this time he had been widely exhibited and reviewed, his work was represented in several notable collections, and his presence was felt in the New York art world. By the end of his life, Solotareff had devoted over a half century to creating his peaceful, happy, evocative scenes and portraits.

Boris Solotareff’s was fascinated by ballet danser:

Original French Art Deco Screen with mural image of Diana by G. Icart

Item #1417 SOLD

Wow, wow wow. Very nice and original painting by French artist G. Icart (famous unusual name Icart, maybe a relative of Louis Icart?) and signed in the lower left corner. This is a wonderful example of classic Art Deco. This original mural features the mythical image of Diana the huntress, with her bow and arrow riding a glorious classical white unicorn. Running through the allegorical forest with vibrant foliage abound.

The piece was purchased in France. It is very well made, even the insides of all panels are painted to match the design, so however you might hang, stand or portray this wonderful painting, it will look great. I think it spent a lot of time closed up so the colors are all still vibrant with depth. The back side (or the frame) even has this wonderful art deco paper or painting as well. Circa 1930's In excellent original condition, its age shows very well.

Painting Lacquered Wood Panel Art Deco Diana The Huntress Mural 3 piece Screen

Item #1149 SOLD

Here is a fantastic original painting by notable Argentinian artist, E. Albertazzi (His drawings and paintings can be found in the City Museum in Buenos Aires). The work comprises all of the elements associated with "Diana The Huntress"; (bow & arrow, hunting dogs, leaping gazelles, all in the wilderness). This very substantial 3 section panel measures approximately 6 feet tall and 6 feet 9" wide. The condition is excellent and all original with no restoration, changes or adjustments. Strongly influenced by the great French artists such as Pierre le Faguays and Josef Lorenzl, this work of art will create a wonderful mood in any art deco home. The colors are subtle and warm with hues of peach, cream, beige and green. Possessing many beautiful elements found in authentic Grecian style dress, Diana dominates the scene in this mural-like painting while the great palm trees bend over her protectively. A wonderful depth is achieved on this wood canvas and many textures are portrayed throughout. This painting depicts an outstanding Art Deco theme that is both mythic and familiar. Needless to say; paintings of this style, quality and of course this magnitude are a very rare find. It is signed by the artist: E. Albertazzi, 1941, B. Aires.

I'm fairly confident that you will never see anything like this again! This very rare (circa 1925) and thankfully rescued European Art Deco building façade has been dutifully preserved and lovingly protected from the harm of progress. 1930s French Constructivist Wood Panel

Item #988 SOLD

This is a very rare and unusual dual wood panel made in France most likely during the Constructivist period in the early 1930s. Constructivism was an artistic and architectural movement in Russia from 1919 onward which rejected the idea of "art for arts sake" in favor of art as a practice directed towards social purposes. Constructivism as an active force lasted until around 1934, but its influence continues through mid-century design. This work of art is made entirely of wood that has been painted, treated, molded, textured, carved and manipulated to create a geometric, asymmetrical and dramatic effect.

rare collection of art deco paintings

Item #903 SOLD

Presented here is a historic collection of original Art Deco paintings completed by French artist Jacque Dupont. They were retrieved from a local  movie theater in SF on Market Street across from the Fox Theater. These were done in mid 30's during the time when all of Market street was lined with movie theaters such as, The Paramount, The Fox, The Roxy and so on.  They were acquired in the 50's  by a local SF family, supposedly  due to a fire in the theater, like so many deco monuments, the theater was closed and remodeled.  The  family kept them for over 50 years and they have  just been recently framed and offered for sale for the first time. They have a mural like quality, octagon shaped with gilded wood frames. You can see, the stylized art deco female figure in a pictograph of leaves, forest with rich warm colors of brown, orange, green and metallic golds. Offered for sale here are all 3  women:    as brunette, red head and blonde.  The are large in scale measuring:  60" T X 46" W painted on masonry board.  They have great provenance  and are without doubt a dynamic collection of Art Deco beauties.
