1930's "BouBou" Monkey Sculpture Max Le Verrier

1930's "BouBou" Monkey Sculpture Max Le Verrier

1930's "BouBou" Monkey Sculpture Max Le Verrier

Item #1597

Here is a wonderfully rare version of the Max Le Verrier sculpture, "BouBou". It is a monkey with a humorous expression holding an illuminated electric lamp in one hand while the other is held to his ear. A similar version of this piece has been photographed for inclusion in the book 'Mascottes Automobiles' by Michel Legrand. Le Verrier produced a small range of monkey subject mascots in the 1920s. This one is perhaps one of his most famous creations. "BouBou" is made of a beautifully patinated metal and he sits obediently upon a round marble base. This charming and quizzical sculpture stands 7" tall and is signed "M LeVerrier".

Measurements:
7" t x 3" W x 3" D

About Max Le Verrier:
Max le Verrier was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1891. From an early age he showed great promise as an artist and sculptor; and after serving in the French army during World War I, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva. During his studies in Switzerland he met fellow sculptors Pierre le Faguays and Marcel Bouraine, who became close friends and with whom he collaborated for much of his life. Upon completing his studies, le Verrier returned to France in 1919, and founded his own studio in Paris. It was at this time that he created his first popular sculpture - the famous 'Pelican' - which was the first of a long line of animal figures that bore his name. Le Verrier was awarded a Gold medal for his sculptures at the 1925 Paris l'Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels (the famous exhibition from which the term 'Art Deco' was derived). In 1926, le Verrier opened his own foundry, casting pieces for a wide range of French sculptors of the period, including Pierre Le Faguays, Marcel Bourain, Janle, Denis, and Charles. From the outset, he gained a reputation for the very high quality work, exceptional detailing and accuracy of the items that his firm produced. Interestingly, the foundry did not cast in bronze as is commonly assumed, because le Verrier felt that he could achieve better detail by using his own proprietary mix of metals. At the same time as running his foundry, le Verrier continued to sculpt his own creations, and in the 1920's he became famous for his studies of woman as part of the Art Deco era's fascination with the ideal female form. His female figures are characterised by a lithe athleticism and perfect symmetry; and are highly regarded and much sought after. Le Verrier continued working throughout the 1930's - receving a medal of honour at the Paris International Exhibition in 1937 - before being arrested in 1944 for his resistance activities against the Nazi-backed regime. He reopened his studio after World War II, and continued to sculpt until his death in 1973.

Item #1573

This spectacular Max Le Verrier piece was designed in 1923. It is called 'Danseuse a La Coupe'. This is a special piece, one I have only once in well over 12 years. It is all original: and in fantastic condition. It is a very beautiful piece, which is styled after a dancer from Follies Bergeres. The woman, rather scantily dressed in simple skirt (that's all), her hair very stylized, holding a gorgeous domed moulded glass lamp. The style is pure Art Deco, glass looks like typical French molded glass of the period. There are remarkable details on this sculpture and the patina has a beautiful original glazed- bronzed look that is not something you see everyday. Outstanding! The light adds a warm glow both to the woman and the stylized floral motif in the top. The size is quite nice as well and is signed Le Verrier in the base. A remarkable piece with great Art Deco style. A sculpture you can enjoy for years and years to come. I mean she looks pretty good for 88 years old.

Spectacular Art Deco Diana Huntress and Leaping Antelope by Le Verrier Demarco

Spectacular Art Deco Diana Huntress and Leaping Antelope by Le Verrier Demarco

Spectacular Art Deco Diana Huntress and Leaping Antelope by Le Verrier Demarco

Item #1571

Presented here is one of the finest sculptures we have had to date. It is the epitomy of great Art Deco design, showing all the signs of a classic, both in style, quality and presence. This is Diana the Huntress, a theme often repeated in Art Deco folklore. What makes this piece so great: It has the style, the size and all the elements. First, the quality is great, brass metal with special green patina, very heavy and all well made. Secondly, the movement of the pieces shows the elegance of what we understand as style, substance equalling Art Deco. Diana is in a wonderful pose, one leg up with the most fluid bow shape I've seen on a sculpture. As she effortlessly shoots the leaping Antelope, whose antlers also grace and compliment the angled stepped concrete cast base.

The designer, most likely is Max Le Verrier, it is from the foundry where he was so famous for creating the epic Art Deco sculptures now associated with this great Art Deco period in France. Circa 1930's. The base was made by the artist "Demarco" who was known for producing these kind of bases and also as artist in his own right working with this kind of material.

Circa 1930 cast metal with a bronze patina in excellent condition and one of the finest two-tiered portoro marble with green marble inlay.

This is a classic art deco statue. Beautiful woman rendered in flowing garments, highly decorated as she walks her Borzoi dog. Her hands and face appear to be original ivory (look closely at the fine grain detail on her angelic face). The dogs appears pleasantly subservient without issues. The pieces stand nicely on a very beautiful base of original quartz marble and is signed in the back corner S Cali. Small restoration visible on her left hand fingers, I mean she is about 80 years old and still looks pretty good.

Original Art Deco nude in marble by Joe Descomps

Item #1544

This stunning all original statue made of pure white marble, shows so much grace, talent and sophistication. The Art Deco beauty is rendered by the hands of a master: Joe Descomps whose worked is extremely sought after, often imitated and copied. He is well known for Bronze statues and working with ivory as well. The nice thing about owning a real marble statue, there is only one, it is never a casted piece but done by the hand of the artist. Look at the gentle smile, the details of the back, feet and hand positions. Also she is wonderfully draped to cover her breast, all so neatly separated. I think I am in love (for real)! Completed around 1920. This is guaranteed original and she is fantastic.

JOE DESCOMPS (FRENCH, 1872-1948) WAS BORN IN CLERMONT-FERRAND AND STUDIED UNDER H. HIOLIN. HE EXHIBITED OFTEN AT THE SALON OF THE SOCIETE DES ARTISTES FRANCAIS AND WAS ELECTED A MEMBER IN 1893. HE DESIGNED A HUGE RANGE OF SCULPTURES IN THE ART NOUVEAU to Art Deco STYLE (CIRCA 1880 TO 1930). ART NOUVEAU COULD BE SAID TO BE THE FIRST 20TH-CENTURY MODERN STYLE BECAUSE IT WAS THE FIRST STYLE TO STOP LOOKING BACKWARDS IN HISTORY FOR IDEAS, TAKING INSPIRATION INSTEAD FROM WHAT IT SAW AROUND IT, IN PARTICULAR THE NATURAL WORLD. DESCOMPS CONCENTRATED IN BRONZE AND IVORY FIGURES.

I love the piece. It is very interesting, fun and playful. Quite unusual really. I've never seen such a highly stylized base, using portoro marble, metal feet and very spectacular amboyna and macassar wood to help create the impression of two cats joyfully playing with one another. The cats have an unusual spotted patina, both of them portrayed in a most unusual way. Substantial size as well.

Original French Art Deco Statue by Fayral La Faguay with light

Original French Art Deco Statue by Fayral La Faguay with light

Original French Art Deco Statue signed Fayral ( Le Faguays) with light

Item #1489

Here is a wonderful original statue by Fayral (also worked under the pseudonym Guerbe and his own name Pierre Le Faguays).

This is in remarkable original condition! It is shown with fabulous rose marble and original "brain" crackled glass globe. She is a lovely figure: a stunningly beautiful young woman with a short bob haircut (typical of the Roaring Twenties). She is nude to the waist with a draped skirt, The maiden in green patina is inspired from the Egyptian influence, like a hand maiden carrying water ( but in this case, a light). The piece is signed on the metal base "Fayral" and also bears the Le Verrier studio foundry stamp as well. What a piece!

PIERRE LE FAGUAYS (FAYRAL) (1892-1935) Pierre Le Faguays was a best friend of sculptor Max Le Verrier and the "Le Verrier" foundry made most - if not all of Le Faguay's pieces. Fayral and Guerbe were 2 pseudonyms he also used and were both the family names for his mother and his wife.

Bronze Javelin Thrower by A. P. Hugonnet French 1930s

Item #1397

A wonderful and very large original bronze by A. P. Hugonnet. Obviously depicting the classic javelin thrower. This is very well designed and quite an intense figure. Look at his face, look at his hands, lots of details. You know so many of these classic athletic poses were inspired by the 1924 Paris Olympics which served as a great breeding ground to influence the designs by many artists of these stylized male statues during this time. Our man here may have been fashioned after one of the great javelin athletes competing in Paris during 1924. Unfortunatley the original base was broken, but we were able to make a replica of the original (with two pieces in a stepped affect) and used a piece of back marble with his original signature, taken from the original base. As you can see, some time was spent to artistically inlay this into the new base. It is stamped "bronze" on the figure and is a very impressive piece.

Item #1303

Very unique original green patinated bronze state by French artist Pierre LaFaguays. 3 men holding up urn on black Belgium marble base. It is in original condition with no restoration and piece shows some original wear and details.

Le Faguays was born in Nantes, France and became famous for the originality and grace he gave his dancers, many of which were inspired by the statues of Tanagra. Item #1291

A most unusual and beautifully articulated French Art Deco Sculpture lamp signed "Limousin".

The spectacular jazz age base lights up, illuminating exceptionally fine sculptures of two women. Hand applied gilding adds wonderful character to this stunning piece.

Limousin is the region in France where the piece was designed and made. It is typical for ceramics, glass and sculpture to bear the name of the region (such as Lorraine, Nancy, Sevres or Limousin) rather than the name of a specific artist.

Be sure to zoom in on the photos to see the manner in which the hands, face and feet were detailed. That is a mark of an outstanding statue and wouldn't this one be just perfect in your home?

1930s European Lioness Serving Tray • Hagenauer

Item #1219

This 1930s Art Deco Serving Tray most recently hailed from the Czech Republic. It is an unsigned piece but it is noticeably in the style of Austrian sculptor, Franz Hagenauer (1906-1986). It possesses a simple round chrome serving tray fitted with an anything-but-simple handle. A beautifully sculpted, ferocious ebony lioness with a chrome tail and ears (and very pointy teeth) serves as the handle as she leaps across the tray and over the cocktails over and over and over again. The overall design offers a nice balance between textures and detail. From serving martinis to holding dinnerware/napkins, you'll find a multitude of uses for this tray and regardless of the use - you'll not want to let that leeping lion out of your sight!

Item #1122

We acquired this French 1930s bronze sculpture by Pierre Le Faguays (1892-1935) from a private French collector who told us that he originally bought the sculpture in the 1950's while shopping in Porte de Clignancourt. This is an important and artistically executed bronze statue of a beautiful nude female with draping named "Ondine". The enchanting, realistic face, the hands and the feet of this sculpture are intricately detailed and the (hefty!) bronze has taken on a gorgeous patina with age. The elaborate geometric stepped marble base consists at least 5 different kinds of marble. It is stunning in its own right and looks as though it were built for a 1930s Hollywood movie set. Needless to say, it's the perfect platform for this stunning beauty.

Pierre Le Faguays was born in Nantes, France in 1892. He was not only a talented sculptor, but also a leading member of the committee for the 1925 Paris Exhibition.
