1930s Art Deco Chryselephantine Sculpture • Signed Max Le Verrier

1930s Art Deco Chryselephantine Sculpture • Signed Max Le Verrier

1930s Art Deco Chryselephantine Sculpture • Signed Max Le Verrier

Item #1238

Here's a truly stunning and exceptional large Art Deco silvered chryselephantine Art Deco sculpture; designed by Max le Verrier and manufactured at the le Verrier foundry in Paris in the 1930s. It features a superbly-sculpted figure of a semi-nude classical female figure holding a Grecian urn. This stunning sculpture - which measures a tall 16-1/8" in height - is superbly cast in le Verrier's proprietary metal, which has the weight and feel of bronze. The grecian urn is sculpted from tusk. This piece is signed 'M. Le Verrier' on the base (see photos); and is in excellent condition, with no faults whatsoever, other than some minor wear and spotting to the silvered finish. This is overall, a truly spectacular Art Deco sculpture from one of the greatest of the period's sculptors and sure to be an important addition to any le Verrier, chryselephantine or Art Deco sculpture collection.

About Max Le Verrier:
Max le Verrier was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1891. From an early age he showed great promise as an artist and sculptor; and after serving in the French army during World War I, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva. During his studies in Switzerland he met fellow sculptors Pierre le Faguays and Marcel Bouraine, who became close friends and with whom he collaborated for much of his life. Upon completing his studies, le Verrier returned to France in 1919, and founded his own studio in Paris. It was at this time that he created his first popular sculpture - the famous 'Pelican' - which was the first of a long line of animal figures that bore his name. Le Verrier was awarded a Gold medal for his sculptures at the 1925 Paris l'Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels (the famous exhibition from which the term 'Art Deco' was derived). In 1926, le Verrier opened his own foundry, casting pieces for a wide range of French sculptors of the period, including Pierre Le Faguays, Marcel Bourain, Janle, Denis, and Charles. From the outset, he gained a reputation for the very high quality work, exceptional detailing and accuracy of the items that his firm produced. Interestingly, the foundry did not cast in bronze as is commonly assumed, because le Verrier felt that he could achieve better detail by using his own proprietary mix of metals. At the same time as running his foundry, le Verrier continued to sculpt his own creations, and in the 1920's he became famous for his studies of woman as part of the Art Deco era's fascination with the ideal female form. His female figures are characterised by a lithe athleticism and perfect symmetry; and are highly regarded and much sought after. Le Verrier continued working throughout the 1930's - receving a medal of honour at the Paris International Exhibition in 1937 - before being arrested in 1944 for his resistance activities against the Nazi-backed regime. He reopened his studio after World War II, and continued to sculpt until his death in 1973.

Item #1224

Here's a highly decorative and intriguing 1920s German Art Deco statue from the Schwarzburger Werkstätten für Porzellankunst (Schwarzburger Porcelain Art Workshops). This beautifully detailed and colorful porcelain work of art was designed by the artist Marta Schlameus. The colors comprise a white porcelain glaze, with blue, teal, yellow and black overglaze. Depicted is a young, spry (and rather animated) Japanese man, dressed in a colorful costume while sitting upon a tree stump. A bluebird is perched on his right hand as he looks upon it and gestures playfully with his left hand. The bottom of the base is stamped Schwarzburger Werkstätten für Porzellankunst and U-290.

Art Deco Streamline Bookends - Trylon Perisphere New York

Art Deco Streamline Bookends - Trylon Perisphere New York

Item #1222

These are probably the nicest Art Deco Streamline book ends I've ever seen. I purchased them years ago in Paris and have just recently restored them. They're constructed with solid Macassar Ebony and they're in perfect condition with no damages or repairs. All of the chrome pieces have been re-plated and they look stunning against the dark wood. The big peach-colored glass balls are in perfect condition with no damages or repairs. They're a fabulous streamline, space-age design with those Saturn-inspired rings around the glass balls. I think they've even got a Trylon and Perisphere NYWF look about them. These are very heavy, substantial bookends and they'll make your reading even more interesting!

1930s French Art Deco Serving Tray

1930s French Art Deco Serving Tray

1930s European Lioness Serving Tray • Hagenauer

Item #1219

This 1930s Art Deco Serving Tray most recently hailed from the Czech Republic. It is an unsigned piece but it is noticeably in the style of Austrian sculptor, Franz Hagenauer (1906-1986). It possesses a simple round chrome serving tray fitted with an anything-but-simple handle. A beautifully sculpted, ferocious ebony lioness with a chrome tail and ears (and very pointy teeth) serves as the handle as she leaps across the tray and over the cocktails over and over and over again. The overall design offers a nice balance between textures and detail. From serving martinis to holding dinnerware/napkins, you'll find a multitude of uses for this tray and regardless of the use - you'll not want to let that leeping lion out of your sight!

The Measurements:
The Tray is 12" Diameter
The Panther is 15" Long

This is one very large and spectacular Art Deco centerpiece with details that are both intricate and elaborate. Three beautifully costumed, turbaned and physically fit male acrobats stand on a circular, stepped Deco platform while they dramatically arch backwards supporting a very large floral/ leaf-inspired planter/centerpiece. This lovingly created and very imaginative work of art is Hollywood theatrical in spirit and breath-taking to behold. It's made entirely of beautifully polished pewter and as such is very, very heavy. This daring centerpiece would be stunning with or without flowers/plants on a dining table, console, pedestal or perhaps even a large mantel. Made and signed on the bottom by the Italian artist Figaro Piero.

Bronze Art Deco Statue by Pierre Laurel

1930s Art Deco Bronze Pierrot & Pierrette Statue • Pierre Laurel

Item #1147

Heres an unusual an quite striking nickeled bronze statue by sculptor Pierre Laurel from the Marcel Guillemard foundry. It depicts the female harlequin, Pierette in strong Art Deco style holding a similarly attired and smaller male harlequin, Pierrot. Her elaborately detailed costume reflects the deco style and coordinates with the little man. Pierrot and Pierrette are the harlequin characters often depicted in Art Deco imagery as the tragic lovers who could never really come together as a couple. This gorgeous bronze statue is signed below Pierrette's feet, Pierre Laurel and also Marcel Guillemard 24 and stands on a beautiful red marble base.

Item #1140

Here's both a gorgeous work of art and an important historical reminder. This considerably large sculpture (a full 24" wingspan) is made from solid Rosewood and chrome plated brass. The airplane pivots on an aluminum rod and as such the positioning is infinitely variable. This stunning and thought-inducing piece looks truly fantastic from every angle and is in perfect condition. It is certainly rare to find a USAF WWII Fighter-Plane sculpture and even more rare to find such a beautifully artistic example.

About The United States Air Force P-38 "Lightning":

The Lightning designed by Lockheed engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson and his team of designers, represented one of the most radical departures from tradition in American fighter development. The Lightning was a complete break-away from conventional airframe design, power, and at long last, armament. Not only did it have twice the power and almost twice the size of its predecessors, but with no less than four .50 cal. machine guns plus a 20 mm cannon, the P-38 had enough firepower to sink a ship--and sometimes did. Concentrated in the central fuselage pod, the guns fired parallel which eliminated a need for a propeller synchronizer.
The Lightning tricycle landing gear and twin-boom configuration completed the list of major deviations from what might he considered conventional Army fighters. In this respect, it was very unusual that the Lightning design progressed beyond the testing stage; such radical concepts seldom achieved production status. But the simple fact was that the P-38 design worked and the Army seemed to have found its dream plane in this 400 mph fighter.
The P-38 was the only American fighter aircraft in active production throughout the duration of American involvement in the war, from Pearl Harbor to VJ Day.

1930s French Art Deco " Louise Brooks" Bronze Sculpture

1930s French Art Deco " Louise Brooks" Bronze Sculpture

1930s French Art Deco " Ondine" Bronze Sculpture • Pierre Le Faguays

Item #1122

We acquired this French 1930s bronze sculpture by Pierre Le Faguays (1892-1925) from a private French collector who told us that he originally bought the sculpture in the 1950's while shopping in Porte de Clignancourt. This is an important and artistically executed bronze statue of a beautiful nude female with draping named "Ondine". The enchanting, realistic face, the hands and the feet of this sculpture are intricately detailed and the (hefty!) bronze has taken on a gorgeous patina with age. The elaborate geometric stepped marble base consists at least 5 different kinds of marble. It is stunning in its own right and looks as though it were built for a 1930s Hollywood movie set. Needless to say, it's the perfect platform for this stunning beauty.

The Measurements:
The sculpture (including base) stands a total 16" Tall
The base measures: 7-1/2" Wide X 3-1/2" Deep

Fayral and Guerbe were each pseudonyms used by the famous Pierre Le Faguays. Fayral and Guerbe were the family names of his Mother and his Wife respectively. Le Faguays was born in Nantes, France and became famous for the originality and grace he gave his dancers, many of which were inspired by the statues of Tanagra. He was awarded a medal of honor for his work in 1927. His best friend, Max Le Verrier (of the Le Verrier Foundry) made most of (if not all of) his pieces.

I'm really drawn these unusual bookends. They possess a quintessential Scottie silhouette with "drawing-like" dimensional details. They're carved from wood and as such, have an expectedly warm feel to them. They're commanding, yet adorable. Yes, somehow, they're just right. A loving, 1930s French Art Deco tribute to "Man's Best Friend". One of the two bookends is signed by the French artist/sculptor - U.J. Bornes.

The Details:
The bookends are made of wood and stained a deep mahogany color. They sit obediently on a wooden base finished with black lacquer
