Rare Clarice Cliff "English" modernist Art Deco ceramic Tea serviceItem #1455 SOLD Wonderful modernist repeat circle pattern design by Clarice Cliff for Newport Pottery Co England, circa 1930. She may be the most famous name for English ceramic designs, a real genius of the period (sometimes referred to as The original Bizarre Girl). Clarice Cliff designs have not only surpassed the idea of "Art Deco" but more then any other single person, help to create the Art Deco aesthetic. There are many books written on her work and designs, with web sites dedicated to the history and information for collectors of all concerns. This is a simple, but elegant 6 piece set, each piece is marked with the Clarice Cliff signature and the condition is excellent. Measurements: Clarice Cliff One of the pioneer designers and decorators of highly stylistic Art Deco ceramics during the early 1920s as the sleek, modern style of Art Deco took over Europe and the United States well into the 1930s and up until World War II. Clarice Cliff used basic pottery shapes which were clean yet angular in appearance, and then decorated them in vibrant colors along largely geometric patterns. Clarice Cliff was born in 1899 in the heart of Staffordshire region of ceramics production in England. Born into a family well schooled in pottery, she left school at age 13 and started apprenticing with local potterys in the area. At age 16, she began working for the A. J. Wilkinson Company in Burslem, England near where she had gorwn up. Colley Shorter, the managing director of the company, recognized her talent almost immediately and they soon even sent her to the Royal School of Art in London to continue developing her skills. Eventually, the company set up a separate studio from which she could experiment with new designs. Clarice was always a talented potter, it was not until 1925 when she was exposed to the Exposition Internationale of Arts Decoratifs et Industrialies Modernes in Paris that her creativity came into full bloom. This was the international exhibition during which the Art Deco and "moderne" style burst onto the international design scene, and Clarice was fascinated by the geometrically grounded modern designs being introduced for all the necessary amenities of daily life. Wilkinson had always encouraged Clarice to design her own lines, and she was offered an even greater opportunity to create when Wilkinson purchased the Newport Pottery. Clarice took Newport "blanks" and began decorating her own unique and whimsical designs. In 1928, Clarice Cliff began producing one of her most beloved lines, "Bizarre Ware", which she continued producing until approximately 1937. She even had her all-female group of potters known as the "Bizarre Girls" who traveled the country to trade fairs and shows to promote the line. Cliff adopted the geometric shapes of Art Deco, but she also worked in figural shapes including the well known "Age of Jazz" figures as well as abstract shapes. Her color decorations were vibrant and included the entire hue of colors but especially favoring blue, black, orange, and yellow. Clarice Cliff designs maintained their cheery design aesthetic with couples dancing and flowers blooming despite the years affected by the depression in the early 1930s. The floral works are very strongly collected today, but they were also popular during the period of production. Additional artisans were hired to execute Cliff designs by hand on the company's products, and the "Crocus" pattern became one of her all time best sellers. The success of Clarice Cliff ceramic designs during this period gave her great success and peer recognition in the arts world, still unusual for a woman during the 1930s. In 1939, Colley Shorter's wife died, and he and Clarice were married in the following year. In later years, Clarice Cliff designs lost favor with the public, and the innovation of the twenties and thirties never returned. She and Colley never had children, and Clarice Cliff passed away in 1972. |

Spectacular German WMF Silverplate Art Nouveau Tea and Coffee SetItem #1450 SOLD This five piece set is a perfect example of transitional design as its fluid, Art Nouveau embellishments also have an early Art Deco point of view. It is ornate, yet refined. Organic and geometric. It's one of the best we have been able to offer and silver tea and coffee services are one of our specialties. Whether you use it every day , or simply leave it to decorate a dining table or buffet it will bring a touch elegance into your home. Every piece is in outstanding condition, including the tray with its wonderful octagonal shape. The tiny decorative element is a fish motif. and the pattern is most unusual. The set bears the marks of the WMF silver company, the intials of the famous German foundry " Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik", most often simply called WMF. It was founded in the 1853 as a partnership between Daniel Straub and Josef and Friedrich Schweizer, and in 1892 developed a special technique for silver plating in which the silver coating is of double thickness in any parts that will be exposed to greater wear and tear. This patented process is called "Perfect Hard Silver Plating". In 1910, under the art direction of Albert Mayer, WMF became famous for its Art Nouveau style and established companies for world wide exports in London, Warsaw and Vienna. Many pieces were sent to Argentina between 1910 and 1930, and it is likely that Harrods Department Store which opened in Buenos Aires in 1912 was one of the major importers of decorative pieces such as this tea and coffee set. Susie Cooper Art Deco Tableware dishes extremely rare, Tango pattern!Item #1433 SOLD This is an exciting Susie Cooper, thirty one piece set of the striking modernist china by one of Britain’s most re-known ceramicists and dinnerware designers. Created in 1933 the graduated black bands on cream background comes alive with bright orange detail. In an era of otherwise flowery and whimsical pattern names and embellishment this truly stands out as bold and forward thinking. The pattern is “Tango (orange) or E/496.” This pattern is predominately featured in the most important books on Susie Copper and 20th Century Ceramic designers. Today, one usually finds a single cup, a jug or plate at auction. but here is a stunning set of luncheon plates, cake/bread plates, cups, saucers and berry bowls with an oval serving bowl and pticher.. A few pieces have slight crazing, some have some shading from 'hand painting' and there are only five berry bowls, but this is a wonderful find for a collector...even if only for a dynamic display! Along with Clarice Cliff and Charlotte Rhead, Susie Cooper is famous for introducing vivid colors and avant garde designs to English Pottery and this is one of the finest and most collectable. Her career, highly documented in many books on Art Deco and Ceramics spanned more than 60 years, including her “Deco Era “ work at Crown Pottery in Burslem in the 30s through the 60s and 70s as a master designer at Wedgewood China. |

Exceptional Sterling Silver Italian Art Deco Flatware service for 12 with box!Item #1399 SOLD Here we go, a long story but worth all the effort. We are presenting one of the finest Art Deco sterling 800 flatware services you might ever have the chance to buy. Certainly a family heirloom for the right family! The set has it origins in Italy circa 1930's and found its way (with many other beautiful objects) to the wonderful country of Uruguay. I can not tell you what boat brought it over there, but look at the photos and you can see why someone might go through the effort. Each piece is stamped with the makers mark and #800 sterling, the design is made up of wonderful faceted handles (both front and back) and the opulent style of what I would refer to as very refined moderne art deco design. More of that later, first here is what makes up this 160 pieces set.
Total 160 pieces all in a beautifully made macassar ebony custom box, with ivory veneered handles, each piece has its own fitted compartment. 6 drawers in total. The box measures: 22" W X 14" T X 14" D. This is truly a magnificent set, more rare then anything you might find today at any of the finest home-wares shop, think of it is "jewelry" for your home! Only serious enquires. |

5 piece Coffee -Tea Service with unusual metal-workItem #1398 SOLD This is a stunning design. Works for either coffee service, tea service, steamed milk or whatever you want. Wonderful metalwork, very clean all around with the most unusual twisted or pretzel metal treatment. Reminds of a wonderful design by the French artist Puiforcat, but these pieces were found in Argentina so it is most likely a design inspired by the great French firm. The pieces are in remarkable condition, very clean and ready to be put to use. A kind of unusual set up, since all pieces have tops. A wonderful and striking suite of serviceable pieces and very nice quality! Measurements: |

Sweet Art Nouveau to Art Deco WMF silver-plate oil-vinegar cruets circa 1920Item #1393 SOLD It is always a treat to find something special like this. Not our typical art deco point of view, but I love to show this transition between Art Nouveau to Art Deco. WMF a German silver company was probably one of the best at doing this. They were so active during both of these periods and when you look at their pieces you can see the decorative design periods in the most obvious and refined way. What is also nice about this piece, it is in perfect original condition. The glass (crystal) is perfect on each piece, not a chip. I assume it was never used, probably a wedding gift that got tucked away somewhere. Also, very nice, we have the original advertisement from the WMF catalogue book. Silver holder, 3 glass pieces for oil, vinegar, salt and?????? Would look smart on any table setting or buffet, both in Art Deco style and earlier. Measurements: |
